Our Goals
With the advent of 64-bit workstations and new graphics technology, many studios are working to implement new versions of linux that support this new hardware. In order to help our software and hardware vendors more easily supply our industry with products that will work in our environment we are publishing a linux reference.
While the reference represents the target environment for all studios, it is expected that each studio’s environment may drift from the reference in response to its own needs. To share information regarding this drift and focus future open dialogues regarding revisions to the reference, several studios have submitted content describing their own linux hardware and software environment. Additionally, several vendors have submitted or linked content to this site including their product requirements for linux. If you would like to submit or link content representing one of the perspectives mentioned above, please send email to info@studio-linux.org. It is expected that the next open meeting to discuss the reference will be at SIGGRAPH 2005.
We are aware of two free but unsupported versions of linux that have these packages: Fedora Core 2, and Suse Pro 9.1.
- The combination of basic packages that we prefer is:
- Kernel: 2.6
- Compiler: gcc 3.3.2
- Threads: posix
- Glibc: 2.3.3, with NPTL
- X: Xorg 6.7 or XFree86 4.3
- Desktop: Gnome 2.6 or KDE 3.2
Currently, we are aware of one supported version of linux that has these packages: Suse Enterprise 9.0. It is our understanding that Red Hat Enterprise Release 4 also will have these packages when it is released.
If you are aware of other distributions containing the combination of basic packages listed above, please feel free to send email to info@studio-linux.org noting the specific distribution.
